The Indian Quarterly

The Indian Quarterly is a new cultural magazine with an emphasis on long-form journalism. The magazine relies heavily on illustrations for its literary pieces and story excerpts. We were commissioned to do editorial illustrations for some of the issues. In our artworks we have tried to reflect the author’s voice by engaging into the quirks and scenarios of the narrative.

In Replica

Volume 9, The Sea

In Replica is an essay by Srinath Perur where he summarises the changing nature of tourism. Through his quirky anecdotes and reports, he speaks of famous tourist spots replicas propping up in places far from its origin and cultural roots. By Two did a spin off on the

essay by illustrating a theme park where tourists can roam around and see all the wonders of the world as large standing cut-outs in quick eighty minutes. The illustration is tongue-in-cheek and parodies the commercial or tout-ish aspect of tourism.

Mr Secondhand

Volume 9, Journeys

Mr. Secondhand written by Manohar Shetty is the story of a Goan gentleman who is at best, a collector and at worst, a boarder. By Two, once again, had the opportunity to illustrate this story for The Indian

Quarterly magazine. This piece was delightfully visual in its description of the characters and artefacts and thus, an absolute pleasure to illustrate. The artwork has been created in digital mix media style.

Ten Rules for Writing

Volume 9, On Writing

Amitava Kumar shares his ten rules of writing that he practices earnestly and without fail. This piece has a simplicity and directness which is borrowed from V. S. Naipaul’s suggested approach to writing. We chose to

illustrate the rules of writing in a similar simple, iconic approach with a sprinkle of humour that makes it easier for the reader to grasp, without having a very dictatorial tone. The artworks were rendered digitally.
